Jet Lag: The Battle of the Body Clock

Jet lag is the scourge of travel. We have spent the past four days battling to re-set our body clocks to South American time. Day one was just a fog as we arrived excitedly and despite the wooziness we battled through the afternoon and evening exploring the neighbourhood desperately trying to make it through to the evening in the misguided belief we would trick our brains into thinking it really was normal bedtime when we finally collapsed into bed. That first night’s sleep was just a delusion though as it was only a response to the fact we actually hadn’t slept for the past 24 hours on the flight over. Day two we made the mistake of thinking we could have a quick ‘nanna nap’ in the afternoon after hours of walking and sightseeing. That fifteen minutes turned into the deepest two hours sleep I’d had in three days as obviously it was really 3am in Sydney so my brain was only doing what it thought was right. But a two hour day time nap means very little actual night time sleep. I’ve never been the best of sleepers and you can guarantee that most nights around 3am I am reading my Kindle for an hour but the past three nights this has been happening at 1am, 3am and 5am. Last night I was sure we would have had this jet lag beat but when we came home to change for dinner after a lovely afternoon under the trees of the Museo del Belle Artes having a aperitivo, we both fell soundly asleep at 8pm and then I proceeded to have my usual tri-nightly reading hours; luckily I’m enjoying my book! So…”we beat on boats against the current” of jet lag hoping that today might be the day where it all changes and we might actually sleep an entire night through .
